"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated fans have publicly petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals often depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The trio have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words follow endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound toughness demanded a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international audience.

However the band will always be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
