The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
