British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
