This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
