Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
